BACKYARD BUILT CO.

The client on this project had spent nearly a decade transforming a wrecked corvette into an almost fully carbon, 900HP racecar entirely on his own. He documented his journey on Instagram and gained a pretty large following in the process. He wanted to do something to engage with the audience that he had cultivated, so he figured he could start a lifestyle brand. The brand would represent the values he had always had when it came to his car; old school hands on hobby, and attention to detail.

The Backyard Built logo features Four Thirteen’s very own typeface, Gothic Mansion. The brand has a vintage aesthetic, but is contrasted in places with modern design elements like a wide sans-serif font and a saturated color palette.

Although lightning bolts aren’t an inherently modern object, there is something about the lightning bolt icon that seems to bring a touch of modernity, and ultimately cause an interesting tension within the logo.

Part of the visual identity was the first drop of Merch graphics. Most of the initial drop consisted of versions of the logo printed on different pieces, but the primary design featured an illustration of the client’s corvette, locked up with some type and icons.

Once we finished up the branding and the merch designs, the last piece required to get this brand officially launched was building an e-commerce website. The site, featuring 3 main pages, was built in Squarespace allowing the client to maintain the site after files were handed off.
