The FALSE MONARCHY OF DEMONS
The False Monarchy is Four Thirteen’s in-house apparel brand. The brand illustrates the demons described in the 16th century grimoire, Pseudomonarchia Daemonum. I knew when I discovered this book, which is essentially a collection of really interesting illustration prompts, that I needed to do some drawing. Outside of the merch illustrations, the brand identity has an ominous aesthetic, and utilizes VHS type and image treatments to convey a classic horror film look and feel.
A variety of logo and icon variations were designed for every application from the actual apparel to things like the website where you have a site logo, a favicon, email profile logos, etc. The slight modification on the “F” nods to the demon sigils, and allows for the FM icon to be meaningful even when applied without the wordmark.
Part of this project included the apparel designs themselves. I hand drew each of these illustrations, and digitized them in photoshop, and finally vectorized in illustrator in order to produce the highest quality product.
The website was the second biggest piece of this project. The False Monarchy makes sales almost exclusively online, so the website needed to be appealing and easy to navigate.
The VHS type treatment gets used over photography and lives in places such as the page headers on the website.
